ISSUE NO. 02
The Saint Louie Guide to a Proper Weekend
How to leave town without really going anywhere.
There are weekends that require luggage. And there are weekends that require considerably less. Saint Louie prefers the second kind.
A small bag.
A few good clothes.
Somewhere warm.
And no itinerary detailed enough to become a responsibility.
First: Pack Less
The mistake people make with weekends is packing for every possible version of themselves.
The person who might play tennis.
The person who might go sailing.
The person who might suddenly require a dinner jacket.
The person who may, under highly unlikely circumstances, attend a formal garden party.
Saint Louie recommends choosing one version of yourself and committing to it.
And a tote large enough to accommodate whatever poor decisions happen later.
The Weekend Bag
The 3 Crest Tee
One excellent T-shirt is worth considerably more than three mediocre ones.
The Arched Logo Sweater
Because evenings have a habit of becoming cooler precisely when you've decided not to bring a sweater.
The Corduroy Cap
For mornings when your hair has other plans.
The Old Money Tote
For books, towels, sunglasses and purchases that were definitely not planned.
Friday: Leave Early
The best weekend begins before you're supposed to be anywhere.
Leave work.
Leave the city.
Leave the emails unanswered.
The point is not to arrive somewhere spectacular. The point is to stop being somewhere else.
The journey counts as part of the weekend.
Saturday: Do Less
Saturday should be divided into three parts. Morning. Afternoon. Evening. Everything else is unnecessary administration.
Morning
Wear the Polo Player Tee if you're feeling ambitious. Wear the Preppy Tee if you're feeling especially well organised. Neither requires actual participation in sport.
Afternoon
Lunch. Longer than expected. Perhaps followed by another coffee. Possibly followed by a swim. Definitely followed by sitting somewhere comfortable.
This is where the Arched Logo Sweater earns its place in the bag. Not because you planned to need it. Because you knew better.
Sunday: Don't Ruin It
Sunday is delicate. It should not contain too many plans.
And enough time to return home without immediately thinking about Monday.
There is a particular kind of Sunday afternoon when the light changes, the streets become quieter, and you realise you have nowhere else to be.
That's the moment the weekend was actually for.
Not the destination. Not the hotel. Not the restaurant.
Just the feeling that, for a little while, the usual rules didn't apply.
If it doesn't work for at least three situations, leave it at home.
That is the standard.
The itinerary is optional. The clothes should not be.
